Sundowns Break PSL Record With Win Over Chiefs At The Calabash

Mamelodi Sundowns became the first side to win 12 consecutive games in DStv Premiership history with their 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

Chiefs came into the game reeling after losing 1-0 to Sekhukhune United at home and 4-0 to AmaZulu in their trip to Durban last week.

Meanwhile, Sundowns were brimming with confidence on an 11-match winning streak and playing sumptuous football under head coach Rulani Mokwena.

The opening goal from Neo Maema in the 20th minute typified their approach with some neat inter-play leading to him slotting one into the top corner with his weaker right foot.

Amakhosi were chasing shadows for most of the opening half, with only 23 percent possession at the end of it – much to the dismay of the home fans.

But they started off the second half in a positive fashion as second-half substitute Siyathemba Sithebe – on for Samkelo Zwane, and Ashley du Preez had two early shots at goal but neither forced Ronwen Williams into saves.

The home side showed plenty of endeavor to try and claw their way back into the game and often had Sundowns pegged back in their own half but from the opportunities created, as most of the season, they lacked composure and decision-making in the final third.

Masandawana went on to comfortably hold on to their one-goal advantage and to move 22 points clear of fifth-placed Chiefs.
