Mamelodi Sundowns have been handed a tricky group for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup set for the United States of America.
The expanded edition of the club competition has 32 teams from six confederations across the globe with Sundowns, Al Ahly, Wydad Athletic Club and Esperance the four representatives of Africa.
It will serve as a preparation tournament for the United States of America who are hosting the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico in 2025, as 12 venues are scheduled to be used in 11 host cities for the event running between 15 June and 13 July next year.
With Sundowns in Pot 4, the lowest-ranked teams in the competition, it was always going to be a tough outcome, as they face Brazilian giants Flamengo, Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and South Korean champions Ulsan HD.
Meanwhile, Rulani Mokwena and Wydad AC were handed an even tougher draw, facing Manchester City, Juventus and Al Ain in Group G.
Percy Tau’s Al Ahly kick off the tournament against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, with Palmeiras and FC Porto also in Group A, while Elias Mokwana’s ES Tunis were drawn in Group D alongside Flamengo, Club Leon and Chelsea.
