Mamelodi Sundowns have opted not to take up the option to extend George Maluleka’s contract with the midfielder now available on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old leaves the club after two years where niggling injuries and initially arriving out of shape limited him to just 19 appearances for the Brazilians.
While he was part of two DStv Premiership winning squads, which included the domestic treble this season, the club have opted to release him and not activate their one-year option in his contract after initially signing a two-year deal with an option to extend.
Word of Maluleka’s release was reported by FarPost on Wednesday, and his representative Sean Roberts has now confirmed the news to iDiski Times.
“Sundowns didn’t take up the option, we’re a little bit surprised but George being the professional that he is… he’s super grateful for all the opportunities he’s had and the trophies he’s won at Sundowns,” he said.
“Obviously, teammates become family so it will be difficult to move away but we are all looking forward to his next move and future in football.”
The news come somewhat of a shock after Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi had praised Maluleka for losing 7kgs and recovering from several injury set-backs.
The five-time league winner will now be aiming to land a new club after a bitter-sweet stint with the Brazilians since his pre-contract move from Kaizer Chiefs in 2020.
