The 2023/24 season has seen 23 different teenagers feature in the DStv Premiership – here at the 10 youngest overall.
Shandre Campbell and Relebohile Mofokeng making their case for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Young Player of the Season alongside Stellenbosch and SuperSport United talents Devin Titus and Ime Okon.
It’s brought about the debate over why there’s been a sudden influx of development products being afforded first-team chances of late, which SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt suggested was down to budget constraints of several clubs.
But not only have these players been making their debuts, but several of them have featured prominently in the senior set-ups.
Here’s a list of the 10 youngest on their first appearance in the 2023/24 season:
- Siyabonga Mabena – Mamelodi Sundowns (16 years 7 months 9 days)
- Lucky Muthewi – SuperSport United (17 years 1 month 9 days)
- Luke Baartman – Cape Town Spurs (17 years 4 months 20 days)
- Shakeel April – Cape Town City (17 years 11 months 7 days)
- Shandre Campbell – SuperSport United (18 years 21 days)
- Luphumlo Sifumba – Cape Town City (18 years 25 days)
- Mfundo Vilakazi – Kaizer Chiefs (18 years, 3 months 6 days)
- Thabang Mahlangu – SuperSport United (18 years 6 months 28 days)
- Siviwe Nkwali – Cape Town Spurs (18 years 9 months 2 days)
- Asekho Tiwani – Sekhukhune United (18 years 9 months and seven days)
Orlando Pirates teenager Mofokeng just misses out on the top 10 having been 18 years old nine months and 13 days old when he took the field on the opening day of the season against Stellebosch at Danie Craven.
