AmaZulu head coach Brandon Truter has reiterated his desire to fight for the DStv Premiership title this season after the goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs.
Usuthu moved to second place with 11 points from six games, and should they win their game in hand over Royal AM, when they face Chippa United next week – they could go top.
The swift start to the season has given Truter belief and he said there’s similar optimism brewing within his squad as he aims for higher ambitions than the intial mandate set out by the board.
iDiski Times probed the former Swallows boss about the statement he made on the opening day of the season when they drew 0-0 to TS Galaxy, which followed with wins over SuperSport United, Cape Town City and Swallows, before the KZN derby defeat at the hands of Golden Arrows.
I asked Brandon Truter what the expectations are at AmaZulu.

“I think after the Galaxy game when I said we’re looking to challenge and looking to win something. I think there were still some people that are laughing at me and doubting me at that moment,” Truter said in the post-match press conference at FNB Stadium.
“But I think coach Manqoba also said if you in this industry and don’t have ambitions to win things – then you shouldn’t be here, you understand? I don’t think any team should have a target of top eight or trying to save relegation at the beginning of the season – we should aim high and back ourselves as well.
“That’s the confidence in the team as well and it’s like in religion and Christianity, when you speak life into situations it becomes alive and that’s the belief at the moment, I can’t be okay with just making up the numbers in the league and going for top-eight or top-four.”
Usuthu face Chiefs in the semi-finals of the MTN8 in October, but their next challenge will be the unpredictable Chili Boys next Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (15h00).
