Zothwane – Why Larsen And I Didn’t Celebrate Winner vs Sundowns

Magesi assistant coach Papi Zothwane says the surreal experience of the late winner against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout final was a shock to their system.

The iconic former Bafana Bafana international was one of the finest playmakers in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in his generation but failed to win a trophy over his career.

His first taste of silverware came in incredible fashion of the all adage; David beating Goliath, in reference to Magesi toppling the all-conquering Sundowns last week.

The Brazilians took the lead through Iqraam Rayners and the Premiership rookies fought back via Tshepo Kakora and Delano Abrahams’ late strike.

“When we scored the second goal, myself and coach Clinton, didn’t celebrate, we just sat down, because we looked at the time and saw it was five minutes to go and you can imagine after that what will Sundowns do? They will come back,” he said.

“So, the moment of celebration couldn’t even click because you know the quality of Sundowns, what they could do. But immediately after the final whistle, obviously, it becomes a shock to say, against Sundowns, we have done it.

“It’s a shock until it becomes a reality to say we managed to do it. But personally, for me, for my career, I’m extremely happy, the feeling of winning a league match, three points and winning a cup is a totally different feeling.

“And in fact, the stage on its own, being in a final, is a different stage altogether, so winning was something very special for me, after playing so much and never getting anything. Now as a coach, it’s inspiring me to even work harder, and be hungrier because I felt the feeling of winning a cup, but happy for the players more importantly.

“A squad of players who just came into the league, but I couldn’t ask for more achievement than this one, I’m hoping it’s not the first and last, winning is nice, I just hope for more.”

The Limpopo-based outfit will now take on the Carling All-Stars for the Carling Cup title at Orlando Stadium on 21 December.
