Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Arthur Zwane has explained why winger Kgaogelo Sekgota hasn’t started many games for Amakhosi this season.
The 24-year-old, who joined the club from Swallows FC ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, has only made two league starts all season, while coming on 16 times as a sub.
Sekgota, though, has looked lively in the last few games, featuring in five of the six games since Zwane and Dillon Sheppard took over from Stuart Baxter, which led to iDiski Times asking why the speedy winger hasn’t started more often.
“Sekgota has been doing well. The only challenge with Sekgota has been his endurance capacity,” Zwane said when asked about Sekgota by David Kappel.
“But we’re working on it, because as coaches we’ve got the task of working with the players and improve them. And he he’s coming alright.
“If he’s gonna be available, physically and mentally ready, I think we will start with him, if he is ready. Again, we also have to look at our bench, how many players are we going to have on our bench that can impact the game and give us a little bit of energy, especially when we’re chasing the game or we want to score some goals and create more goal scoring opportunities.
“So we couldn’t start with him because we didn’t have enough players on the bench and again if you start with him and he ‘dies’ – let’s say he gives us 60 minutes and we don’t have players that can come in and give us that oomph then it might be a challenge for us.
“We’re working on him when it comes to his game when it comes to his game understanding and also his endurance, because he’ll make a few sprints, maybe four or five sprints and then he’s finished and we have to now push him and say ‘hey, get back into your position when we defending, hey, get into your position again when we attack’ and he’s still recovering that time.
“So we realised, we need to help him, so he’s in a program to prepare to start the games in future. Unfortunately it’s our last game, so we might not be able to have more time to work with him but obviously there’ll be pre-season and the incoming coach also we’ll give him that report so that he knows the challenges of the individuals and also trying to improve them.
“Because we want to make sure that we leave pillars in place for the incoming coach that is going to continue from next season.”
Chiefs will take on Swallows at the FNB Stadium on Saturday at 15:00 and fans can buy their tickets at TicketMaster, Shoprite, Checkers or by following this link.
