Former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe has given his impression on Mamelodi Sundowns’ campaign at the on-going FIFA Club World Cup, saying it’s important they started well.
Masandawana currently sit third in Group F with three points, having won their opening game 1-0 against Ulsan HD before suffering a courageous 4-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
The Brazilians still have a shot to progress to the knockout stage but will have to win their deciding group match against Fluminense.
The former Leeds United captain shared his impressions, insisting that Sundowns is not out of their depth at the tournament.
“I think it started well. I think that’s the most important thing you need, a good start,” Radebe told iDiski Times.
“But it gets tougher as it goes on because I mean it’s a Club World Cup, there are big teams there and there’s a lot of quality. But I think a club like Sundowns should be proud to be representing South Africa and realise how far they got to this stage.
“I mean the quality of the football that they play I think it matches where they are today.”
‘Rhoo’ also believes the tournament is showing how Africa is narrowing the gap with the rest of the world.
“I think we [Africans] have always played second fiddle,” added Radebe.
“And I think now we are showcasing that we are at the stage where we can compete with the world, which I think is great.
“I mean it shows the quality of the players, the individuals I mean you can see that football in Africa is on the up.”
