Lionel Messi picked up the first red card of his Barcelona career, as he was sent off in the Spanish Super Cup final, won by Athletic Bilbao.

Sunday’s sending off was Messi’s first in club colours, after 753 appearances for the Catalans. He had previously been sent off twice for Argentina.

Messi lashed out at Asier Villalibre in the final seconds of extra time, and though initially missed by the official, it was picked up by VAR, and the 33-year-old was shown his marching orders.

He could miss up to four games in La Liga because of the incident.

Bilbao were 3-2 victors after extra time in Sunday’s final.
