Official: Portugal Confirm New Coach

Portugal have announced Roberto Martinez as their new coach after the departure of Fernando Santos.

The latter was relieved of his role after the 2023 FIFA World Cup, where his side got knocked out by Morocco in the quarter-final.

Santos was in charge of Portugal for eight years since 2014 and had guided them to the 2016 UEFA European Championship title – their first ever international trophy – and the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League.

However, he came under criticism for the way he handled all-time record goalscorer and A Selecao captain Cristiano Ronaldo after opting to bench him for his side’s last 16 and quarter-final clashes.

On Monday, the Portuguese Football Federation have confirmed that Martinez is the new head coach.

Martinez himself had been in charge of Belgium between 2016 and 2022 but was sacked after his sailed failed to make it out of the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Despite massively improving Belgium’s world ranking position, Martinez failed to lift any silverware with the European side.
