There were good wins for some of the big teams on day two of the Bayhill Premier Cup 2024, while SAFA Cape Town Academy picked up a second surprise result in two days.
In the opening round of games of the day, SAFA Cape Town, who surprised Cape Town City on day one, caused another surprise when they beat Ubuntu Academy 2-1. Ubuntu had started the tournament with a 9-0 victory against Westridge FC.
The SAFA Cape Town team is a select side made up of players from clubs who didn’t qualify via the playoffs for the main tournament.
That result, and Cape Town City’s 5-0 victory over Westridge, means SAFA Cape Town have already qualified for the knockout stages, and there will be all to play for on Saturday morning when Ubuntu take on City, with only one of the two early tournament favourites still able to qualify for main knockout stages now.
There were good wins for all the U19 teams from the DStv Premiership clubs on Thursday, as City, Cape Town Spurs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch all were victorious.
Spurs hammered Velocity Football Academy 5-0 to all but secure their qualification. Mo Solomons scored a hat-trick.
Sundowns, playing their first game of the tournament, beat Celtic United 3-0, and after that result and their performance, will definitely be one of the teams to watch over the weekend.
In the final game of the day, Stellenbosch, who drew on the opening day, put on a good showing as they beat Highlands Park 2-0 with Cuan Plaatjies scoring a brace.
