Jordaan Gives Crucial Update On VAR

SAFA president Dr. Danny Jordaan has confirmed Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie joined the association’s recent NEC meeting to discuss the implementation VAR, among other things.

SAFA held their recent Ordinary NEC Meeting in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, this weekend, and VAR was among the matters discussed.

McKenzie pledged his support for the implementation of VAR in South Africa after the continuous controversies around local referees.

“We had a good engagement with Minister McKenzie, and he has committed to support the implementation of VAR,” he told SAFA.net.

“We will now meet again with him and the PSL to finalise the plan. He has made a commitment that he will make that there is a contribution from government.”

In an interview, McKenzie told SABC Sport that the implementation of VAR costs R80million once off, and R70 000 per game.
