Mamelodi Sundowns and star player Themba Zwane continue to be locked in negotiations about a new contract going forward.

Speaking to iDiski Times, the player’s representative Jazzman Mahlakgane says that while Sundowns have activated a clause to extend his contract, the parties are now in talks to offer the 31-year-old a new deal that will satisfy both sides.

Zwane’s contract had an expiry date at the end of the month, but Sundowns did have an automatic option to renew. However this would only tie the player down for a further two years, and Mahlakgane says they’re busy negotiating a new package.

“With Mshishi, as you may know, they’re gonna take an option,” Mahlakgane told iDiski TimesVelile Mnyandu

“But now what we have done is we are on the table discussing. Because remember, Sundowns does like a three year with an option, so now we’re trying to negotiate the entire things as one total package.

“Because, I mean, you know, he’s done well, and I think the base on which we are communicating now is the fact that, there could be something that could be done as opposed to taking an option, which, I mean, automatically, they gonna take it. But I think we want to just come up with something better.”

Mahlakgane says Sundowns’ fans needn’t have concerns about ‘Mshishi’, who turns 32 in August, leaving, even though there had been reports that Kaizer Chiefs were ready to pounce if he was to become available.

“I know, Naturena has not made it a secret. I think they always said if he’s available, they want to take it. Yeah. But I mean, this thing is about, you know, negotiations on the table. But we’re on the table, which is good. I mean, the club has come to the table, and I think understood our proposal.”

Mahlakgane explains that while Sundowns have exercised their option to renew, it is now about finding common ground in a new deal going forward.

“We haven’t finalized but the club, they have already exercised the option. Okay, you know, so therefore, the issue that we’re discussing now, it’s more about getting one contract that we can all go out and announce.”
