Banyana Banyana have started their Women’s AFCON qualifier with a 7-0 win over Mozambique in the first leg at Estadio Matola in Maputo on Wednesday afternoon.
Both sides met for a second time this month after Banyana beat Mozambique 2-1 at the recent Cosafa Cup.
However, this time around, Desiree Ellis side could count on a lot more of their overseas players.
In an interesting first half the visitors took control of the match from the beginning as Melinda Kgadiete opened the deadlock in the 22nd minute after a good some good attacking play.
South Africa doubled their lead through Linda Motlhalo in the 41st minute before Gabriela Salgado made it three just a minute before break.
Banyana continued to show their quality after the break and were rewarded when captain Janine Van Wyk made it 4-0 in the 64th minute.
Ellis’ girls were unstoppable on the day as Salgado completed her brace to make make it five before Noxolo Cesane extended the score to six in the 77th minute.
South Africa look set to book their ticket for the second qualifying round of the 2022 Women’s AFCON in Morocco next year, but still have the task of the second leg ahead of them.
Banyana made it 7-0 through Linda Motlhalo in the 89th minute, with the midfielder becoming the second Banyana player to complete her brace.
