Knowing that a victory over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday could take Stellenbosch into second plac on the DStv Premiership table, head coach Steve Barker says it is a great opportunity if they put in a big performance.
Stellenbosch are currently fourth, but a win a their home ground on Wednesday would see them go ahead of SuperSport United.
Their opponents, who shocked AS Vita in the CAF Confederation Cup on the weekend, have not had things go as smoothly in the league, and Gallants are currently 15th on the log, still seeking their first win.
“Ja, it’s obviously a great opportunity,” Barker told the club’s media department.
“But opportunity comes from creating it ourselves, which we have created a platform to put us in a position to go second on the log, which would be obviously fantastic as a team and as a football club to be able to do that.
“It just does mean that again we have to put in a big performance, we have won our last two home games, so would be nice for us to get to get three.
“But our opponents are not an easy opponent, I’ve shown you know that they can, if you are not playing to your best or not performing, it’ll be a difficult game.
“They’ve done well in Africa to qualify for the next round, they’ve got some good individual players in their squad that we will have to be aware of.
“But at the same time, there is a good confidence, there’s a good belief about us, there’s been good preparation, the mood is high in the team and it’s these type of opportunities that we have to have the right commitment, desire and the will to want to achieve what we set ourselves out. And we need to put in a big performance on Wednesday.”
