Benni McCarthy has come out and defended Kaizer Chiefs over their current Covid-19 crisis at Naturena after they opted not to pitch for their last two games.
Amakhosi are experiencing a serious Covid outbreak at Naturena, with the club confirming that 36 members of their personnel have tested positive.
As a consequence, Chiefs decided not to honour their last two games against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows, while the Premier Soccer League has remained silent on the matter.
McCarthy, though, insisted that the Glamour Boys shouldn’t be forced to play MDC players or weaker teams for something that is affecting the whole world.
“If the protocols are followed by all teams then I don’t see the necessary need why matches should be canceled,” he said after his side’s 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates.
“We are professionals and every team is trying their best in keep the players fit and healthy and safe from getting any Covid, so every third day we can enjoy some football.
“Kaizer Chiefs is just an unfortunate case where currently the pandemic spread through the entire team.
“You can’t ask them to go and out MDC team or not enough players out to perform at the level which is quite unfair.
“So I hope that the right thing gets done there and Kaizer Chiefs don’t get punished for something that’s happening in the world.
“We have to show compassion because at the end of the people’s safety and the players’ are fare more important than a football match.”
Chiefs next fixture as a home clash against Sekhukhune United on Sunday, while AmaZulu return to play against Chippa United on Saturday.
