Benni Lays Down Challenge
AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy says he is more than frustrated with his goal-scoring department, an area he had hoped to strengthen before the season started, and has challenged his players to step up.
McCarthy was speaking after his team’s 1-0 loss in the first leg of CAF Champions League preliminary round, at home to Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets.
Despite dominating the possession, and having numerous chances, Usuthu lost the game after conceding a goal against the run of play.
The South African club squandered a number of efforts, but should have had numerous more, especially when Big Bullets were reduced to ten men for the second half.
It has been a disappointing start to the season for McCarthy’s team, who in four competitive matches have just scored once.
It is an area of concern for the coach and especially frustrating considering the former Bafana Bafana striker was a prodigious scorer in his day.
He had wanted to sign a marquee player upfront, someone with a hunger for goals and McCarthy, who has previously spoken about wanting to sign Argentinian Facundo Juarez, says it was an area of concern for a while.
“It’s more than frustrating me, because that was the area in the team where I had the biggest concern with, where I had a number of targets, where I wanted to strengthen the squad, with somebody that wants to score goals, and a striker,” McCarthy said when asked by iDiski Times writer Rob Delport.
And with Lehlohonolo Majoro’s goal against Cape Town City being their only goal in over 360 minutes of football, McCarthy also laid down a challenge to his players to show a desire and intent.
“And then you see, the way we started the season, and I’m challenging now, I’m challenging the players to want to score goals,” he continued.
“Because that was my concern, and that was my marquee position that I wanted to fix in the team, to add to what we have, but someone to come in here, because we play some nice, we play good football. But playing good football and you keep losing games, it doesn’t help you.
“Because goals win games, goals win games! And then beautiful football looks beautiful, then you can enjoy, when you score goals and you win games.
“But unfortunately, we ain’t doing that. So that’s a huge concern for me, and it’s gonna continue to be a concern for me.”
