After ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ unbeaten run in the DStv Premiership on Monday night, AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy said they had to work really hard to get the result.
The victory lifts AmaZulu to third place, and sets up an interesting encounter with second-placed Orlando Pirates on Thursday in both team’s final match of 2021. Sundowns remain 16 points clear at the top.
McCarthy says the champions are a really good team, and it took a a lot of hard work for his side to get the result.
“Yes, obviously, I’m all about consistency and you don’t just do something once,” McCarthy told SuperSport after the game.
“When you find a winning formula, you perfect it, you continue, you work on it, and then you try and perfect it, but I don’t know what happened to us, up until now, we were just all over the show, all over the place.
“But slowly but surely the guys are starting, it’s getting drilled into their heads… We’re a technical team that’s gonna be on their case all the time. So it’s either you do it and see what happens, or…
“So now the players are actually showing, doing it and the quality is there, they know they’re a quality side, they can do well, they proved it last season, but it’s doing it on a consistent basis.
“But I think today it paid dividends but Sundowns is a hell of a team. Shoo, you got to really work hard, a my voice is gone. That’s what happens when you play the champion.
“So ja, listen, it was a good game of football. Two teams that really went for it, but I’m proud of my boys, that we were the, team, we knew we were the team that can stop them on a good day.
“And today was a good day for us, so I’ll take it.”
