AmaZulu became the first team to beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership this season, as Augustine Mulenga’s goal handed them a 1-0 victory at Kings Park Stadium.

The victory also lifted Benni McCarthy’s team to third position, as they join Orlando Pirates on 27 points, 16 points behind Sundowns.

Sphelele Mkhulise had an early chance for the visitors, but went just wide in the second minute.

Denis Onyango made a good diving save from a long range attempt from Thabo Qalinge in the 20th minute, a minute later Bongi Ntuli’s header from the resulting corner went wide to the left.

It was a competitive first half, and while Sundowns controlled the possession and momentum, there weren’t too many opportunities at goal, though Themba Zwane did force Neil Boshoff into a save in the 38th minute.

Goalless at half-time, there were a few early half-chances, though Ricardo Nascimento went just over in the 63rd minute with his header. Thembela Sikhakhane’s effort in the 69th minute was dealt with by Onyango, while Qalinge’s shot four minutes later was always going off target.

But substitute Augustine Mulenga was not to be denied in the 75th minute, as he raced into the box, before beating Onyango to give the hosts the lead.

Boshoff did well to deny Lyle Lakay, as he tried to find the top left corner in the 78th minute.

With their unbeaten record in threat, Sundowns pushed hard for an equaliser, but found a resolute Usuthu stopping them time and time again. In stoppage time Onyango, who had come forward at a last minute corner had a chance, but Boshoff put his body on the line to make the save and get the win.

AmaZulu pick up their fifth win of the season, while Sundowns lose their first in 18 games this season, and 25 overall going back into last term.
