Orlando Pirates co coach Mandla Ncikazi was proud to bounce back from their ‘catastrophic’ result against Mamelodi Sundowns with a win , after Kwame Peprah’s brace handed his team a 2-1 win over Marumo Gallants on Monday evening.
While Pirates went down early, Peprah’s brace secured the three points for the Buccaneers, to lift Pirates into second position on the DStv Premiership table.
Ncikazi says he was proud of the team’s performance, though he was worried at times in the second half as he could see his team was fatigued.
“It was very important that we win and takes points today because from the catastrophic performance or result that we coming from, normally, after such a setback, you will always wait for the comeback,” Ncikazi said in the post match presser.
“And I’m proud of the players. I’m proud of the team that mentally they could overcome that challenge. And I was worried when we conceded that early in the match, not the best of starts, but for them to come back that quickly and score two goals, really proud.
“And I was worried again second half because the schedule already told me that the fatigue was catching up with us ,we playing matches after every two days, I know all teams are faced with that, but really it is, you could see that the energy was depleted in our team, I could see our team dropping back, we couldn’t press.
“We play a high energy game, and then we had to resort into a position two, drop the line a bit, but again, we were not passing while we there, the line of confrontation is designed but again we couldn’t pass the ball, we couldn’t press the ball carrier, just happy that we just went through.
“There’s matches that we have played well and did not get a result. Today, we just wanted to go over the line. And I’m proud of the team, proud of the players.
“I know our supporters are highly frustrated, which I understand their frustration, they deserve better, our chairman deserves better.
“Processes of this nature, the team goes through this, all big team they go through this process. I’m just happy that the players are with us and they got the result today.”
