Billiat Opens Up on Chiefs Future

Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat says he is happy to remain at the club beyond the end of his current contract.

Billiat, 31, joined Chiefs in a high-profile free transfer in 2018 after the expiry of his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns where he emerged as one of the most sought-after talents in African football.

With Masandawna, Billiat was an integral part of Pitso Mosimane’s success as he won seven titles, including three league winners medals and the CAF Champions League.

His switch to the Soweto giants was lauded as the marquee arrival that could spark the change in fortunes for the club – but it’s now heading to seven years without silverware.

Over the past two seasons the Zimbabwean – who is said to be one of the highest-paid players in the league – produced just five goals and six assists in 47 games across all competitions which cast doubt over his future at the club.

But since Stuart Baxter’s return to the club and the signing of Keagan Dolly, Billiat has seen a career renaissance at Naturena, which sees Chiefs now in second place in the league.

With four goals and five assists in 12 games, he’s produced 53% of all Amakhosi’s goal involvements in the current campaign and with his contract set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 season – he admits he’s happy to remain at the club.

“I just want to enjoy every moment. I just want to enjoy it. I know we are growing up as players and time moves fast but we just want to make sure we’re doing the right thing, right now,” he said in a recent interview with iDiski Times.

“We don’t want to look back regretting it, we won’t say I should have done this or that, I just want to win as many games and enjoy and enjoy my football [career] as much as I can. The rest is always… I’m happy at Chiefs. I’m happy at Chiefs and I just want to win stuff with Chiefs – this is where I belong.”

Despite the trophy drought continuing and heartbreak of near misses, from the 2019/20 final day of the league to last season’s CAF Champions League final, Billiat says it’s part of football and believes success is around the corner for the current squad.

“You know, look… I believe everything happens for a reason, the time I’ve been here, God has wanted us to go through certain situations for us to actually feel good when we get silverware you know,” Billiat explained.

“The more we haven’t been getting it, the more we believe, the more we value and see the big difference when we will win it.

“We are professionals, we believe every team goes through such stages and it just happens to be us now. We never drop our heads, we believe we will get something at the end.”
