Former Simba SC head coach Didier Gomes says he would be open to working in the DStv Premiership, which he describes as one of the best in Africa.
Gomes resigned as head coach of the Liga Kuu Bara champions after failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stage – in a remarkable encounter against Jwaneng Galaxy.
Having led 3-0 on aggregate at the break in their second leg in Dar Es Salaam – Morena Ramoreboli’s side managed to score three in 45 minutes to eliminate them on the away goals rule.
But having experienced South African football during his forays in continental competitons and a close follower of the PSL since arriving in Africa nine years ago – Gomes who will be heading the the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as the leader of the Mauritania national team – has expressed his admiration for the South African top-flight.
“Of course I would like to manage in South Africa because the standard of the league is very attractive, its quality. I can watch a lot of matches every week, the level is very good,” he said in the latest iDiski Times.
“The football is very positive and offensive, I appreciate it. There are many good coaches with conviction, with good tactics, I can see that every week when I watch the PSL.
“So for sure, it’s very attractive, so it’s completely obvious that an ambitious coach like me who likes very good football, would want to manage a team there.”
The Frenchman who’s won six league titles in five different leagues on the continent admits he was contacted by two clubs in Mzansi – but was unable to open talks whilst being contracted with the Tanzanian giants at the time.
“I was in touch last year and last year and last May with two clubs in South Africa but I was under contract so it was difficult to leave my team so I could not accept the proposal,” he added.
“But for sure one day, particularly in the future, I examine the possibility or opportunities rather to manage in your country.
“I want to manage a team in high-level leagues, South African league, with the Morocco and Egypt leagues are one of the best in Africa. It will be very interesting to be able to prove my ability in your league.”
Gomes, who won the domestic double with Simba last season will face up to The Gambia, Mali and Tunisia in Group F of Africa’s billineal showpiece in January.
