Mokwena Comments On MTN8 Victory

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena has commented on his side’s first ever victory in the MTN8 Cup.

Masandawana have clinched their first MTN8 title after beating the Citizens a 3-2 in penalties at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.

They had to wait 14 years to lift the trophy, having last won it when it was still known as the SAA Super Eight.

“Don’t we love to make it difficult,” Mokwena asked after the match on SuperSport TV.

“Credit to Cape Town City, they are a very, very good side and they keep fighting throughout the season, the games are never over until they are over for them, you know.

“And they’ve got the possibilities of scoring. When you leave the game open for so long, when you create so many chances and you don’t put them to bed, that becomes lesson number one.

“Lesson number two is we are not a very good side without the ball and in certain moments in the second half, we were very naive and we didn’t look after the ball.

“Then they gained momentum and they are a very good side when they have possession.”

Mokwena also revealed what the Downs coaches told their players after the end of 90 minutes ahead of extra-time.

“We spoke to them at the end of the game before extra-time to say, we’ve got to look after the ball a little bit better, we’ve got to dominate the game a little bit better so that we can make the game an opportunity to win it.

“But again, credit to Cape Town City, they are a top side, with a top coach and very, very good players. It was not easy.”
