Morena On Scoring In Front Of ‘Home’ Fans

After scoring a brace which earned him the Man-of-the-Match award, winger Thapelo Morena dedicated Bafana Bafana’s 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe to his “home fans” in Bloemfontein.

Hugo Broos and his charges picked up the all-important three points against a resilient Warriors side in their fourth 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers’ tie played at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday evening, and are now tied on seven with leaders Rwanda after the latter notched up a narrow 1-0 win over Lesotho.

Morena, 30, who once donned the colours of Bloemfontein Celtic before making a big-money move to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016, was full of praise for everyone who played a vital role in the team’s success on the night, before expressing his excitement at having to once again play in the City of Roses.

“First of all, I’d like to thank God,” Morena said after the game.

“I’d like to thank the technical team for believing in me to help the team to change the game.

“And yeah, it feels very great especially after so long being again in Bloem. We done it for them because it’s been a long one not having a team, and thanks also to the supporters.”

Morena also emphasized on his assessment before being brought on to catch all the headlines by scoring the two goals in under 20 minutes.

“No, I think it was very important also to play the game from the bench seeing a situation that there is space behind the defence.

“And yeah, I think the most important thing, we created the chances and we converted them and that’s the difference.

“Before we left home going to Nigeria we said, ‘the most important thing is to get maximum six points, but if we can’t, we must get four from that’. And we eventually done that.

“And I’m grateful to the whole team because we delivered and we played very well today.”
