Swedish Allsvenskan club IK Sirius have confirmed the signing of South African winger Tashreeq Matthews.
iDiski Times reported yesterday that the 21-year-old was set for a club switch ahead of tomorrow’s transfer window deadline day in Sweden.
Matthews officially parted ways with Varberg, also in the Allsvenskan yesterday, and having agreed personal terms with Sirius, he completed his medical earlier today.
He signed a four year deal with Sirius, and it will be a welcome change of scenario for the young Capetonian, who has struggled in 2022, with injuries and for regular game time. However, last year Matthews was a standout player for Varberg, scoring five goals and getting five assists.
The former Ajax Cape Town youngster made a high profile move to Borussia Dortmund four years ago, before going out on loan to FC Utrecht and Helsingborgs. He joined Varberg in 2020, and played there alongside a number of other South Africans including Keanin Ayer, Dean Solomons, Ryan Moon and Luke Le Roux. Le Roux is now the only one remaining at the club.

Matthews, who turns 22 next month, will now be hoping to impress his new coach, Daniel Bäckström, and earn a regular starting spot in the Sirius team.
"Det som lockade mest var spelfilosofin och deras spelsätt. Hur de spelar sig fram hela vägen och skapar chanser, och hur de arbetar för att äga bollinnehavet."
