Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani is of the notion that Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Tashreeq Matthews’ dangerous studs-up challenge on Marks Munyai should have sent him packing.
Matthews escaped facing the might of the law after what looked like a serious challenge on the TS Galaxy captain in their 1-0 Betway Premiership defeat at Mbombela Stadium last week.

‘The Principal’ said Matthews was lucky to not receive his marching orders as the challenge was serious and could end someone’s playing career.
“We see Tashreeq Matthews here doing what we call serious foul play,” Hlungwani said on Soccerzone.
“Over the ball he goes with studs over the ball and that challenge the player should’ve recevied a red card.
“If you look at it, you’ll see he goes over the ball and then he goes and injure someone.
“It can take someone’s career. So, here he survived.”
Hlungwani was again critical of Matthews who once again had a studs-up challenge in the Nedbank Cup tie against Mpheni Home Defenders, with the former referee believing it should’ve been a straight red card instead of a second yellow.
“The same Tashreeq Matthews. The first one he gets a yellow card for SPA [Stopping A Promising Attack],” Hlungwani added.
“As you can see, he’s using hands to stop the player. That is called tactical foul, so correctly so, referee Mabutu gave a yellow card for that.”

“Now, when we go to the next one, you’ll see that the same Tashreeq, I don’t know nobody spoke to him,” he said.
“But look at what he does! He goes in there with studs above the ankle. That is serious foul play.
“The player should’ve received a straight red. Not a yellow card and a red.
“This is incorrect decision. It was supposed to be straight red, he goes. But I hope he has learnt from this one.”
