There were mixed results for South Africa’s two teams still competing in the CAF Confederation Cup after the weekend’s qualifying round first leg games.
LPRC Oilers 0-2 Orlando Pirates
Pirates took a big step towards the group stages as they won 2-0 against their Liberian opponents at the Samuel Canyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia.
It could have been a different outcome had Oilers captain Ebenezer Solo not missed a penalty in the first half, but instead Pirates took the lead just before the break through Tshegofatso Mabasa.
And Fortune Makaringe doubled the score just before full-time to give the Buccaneers a strong advantage going into next weekend’s home leg.
TP Mazembe 1-0 Marumo Gallants
Mazembe hold the advantage after winning the first leg 1-0 at the Stade du TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi.
Gallants, who were without coach Dan Malesela after he tested positive for Covid, put on a brave performance in the DRC, conceding just the one goal, accredited as an own goal by Lehlohonolo Nonyane in the first half.
The two teams will meet in the second leg in South Africa next weekend.
