Sundowns Provide Update After Players Return

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has provided an update on the squad after they returned to camp after the mid-season break.

The DStv Premiership was halted due to the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with Sundowns firmly in control of the league title race, 14 points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates.

With two new signings already confirmed; Bradley Ralani and Teboho Mokoena, two more may be on the way in the form of Bolivia international Erwin Saavedra and Ethiopia wonderkid Abubeker Nassir – the league champions have been actively looking to improve their squad.

And Mokwena has provided insight into what the first week looked like after their short break over the festive period.

“Camp has been good, we are here now, for five days. Of course, part two, to returning back from the festive break was the first 10 days, we spent at Chloorkop to try to work a little bit on, on the condition of the players,” he said.

“We did a lot of testing, but also a lot of work with video analysis, reviewing the first part of the season, and trying to make sure that we are working towards improving the team and, and improving the players so that we can improve the product.

“So that work has continued in, in the realm around the players have responded exceptionally well, we’ve done some very good work on the pitch to try to improve certain critical areas of our performances. And that’s, that’s where we are.”

The co-coach went on to add that they’ve already offered the team a run out against a second-tier side this week which he provided some positive feedback from.

“So far. So good. One friendly match within the system, which we played earlier today against Platinum City rovers in NFD side and the performance was was very, very good.

“And then one more game to go tomorrow where we try to improve on today’s performance try to improve on on the physical condition try to improve on on on some tactical schemes, and particularly the new ones that we’ve introduced for the second half of the season.”
