Super Sub Mhlongo Steals It For Swallows

Super sub Joseph Mhlongo grabbed a late winner for Swallows, as the 2019/20 Glad Africa Champions beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday night.

The DSTV Premiership rookies moved top of the table with the victory, and remain unbeaten after 5 games.

It was a tight affair between the two Soweto clubs, but for much of the game there wasn’t a lot of goal mouth action.

In the first half Chiefs had a goal disallowed when Daniel Cardoso was adjudged to have fouled Virgil Vries, with the ball in the back of the net.

Kaizer Chiefs did look to have a valid handball call a few minutes before Mhlongo’s goal, as the ball seemed to strike defender Njabulo Ngcobo’s arm.

But the call was turned down by Masixole Bambiso, who waved play on.

And then with five minutes to go, debutant Mhlongo scored, getting to the end of a cross from Swallows captain Lebogang Mokoena, and the former Black Leopards winger used his knee to beat Itumeleng Khune and steal the result.

Mhlongo had a bit of a reputation at Leopards as a super sub, where in his 60 league appearances for the Limpopo club, he came off the bench 46 times.

It was Mhlongo’s first appearance since signing for Swallows, after having sat out previous games through injury.
