While everyone’s attention was on the start of the DStv Premiership, the GladAfrica Championship also kicked off last weekend.
And it was an interesting weekend of action, starting on Saturday, where we saw three home victories and two draws.
The unexpected leaders after the first weekend are the new revived Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila who came from behind to beat Cape Town All Stars 3-1. Considering that last week it was unsure whether or not they had any players, it was an unlikely victory that will delight the Limpopo club.
JDR Stars won the Tshwane derby against AmaTuks, as Sipho Zwane scored in the dying minutes to seal the three points, while former Maritzburg United striker Mohau Mokate handed TS Sporting a 1-0 win over Pretoria Callies.
Northern Cape’s Hungry Lions made their professional debut with a goalless draw against Uthongathi, while two former Premiership regulars Black Leopards and Polokwane City drew 1-1
Sunday brought just one draw, as two teams won on the road.
While it was goalless between Cape Town Spurs and debutants Venda Football Academy, there was a big win for another of the new teams, Platinum City Rovers, as they won 1-0 away against Free State Stars.
There was also a dramatic winner in the Jomo Cosmos – Richards Bay game as Sakhile Hlongwa converted a penalty in the last minute to give the KZN team a 1-0 win.
Action resumes this coming weekend, and with two or three coaching changes having already happened during the pre-season, don’t be surprised if others happen soon, especially with an international break looming…
