Warriors lifted the inaugural DStv Compact Cup after they beat Coastal United 2-1 in the final at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the day Dinaledi beat Amabutho 1-0 in the third/fourth playoff.
Fans didn’t have to wait long for the final’s first goal, as Ashley Du Preez scored for Steve Barker’s Coastal United in the opening minute with a great individual effort, as he raced down the left and into the box, before his composed finish beat Itumeleng Khune.
Warriors, led by Dylan Kerr, were level in the fifth minute, another good goal, this time from Ruzaigh Gamildien, who left Oscarine Masuluke with no chance with his shot from the edge of the area.
Evidence Makgopa’s effort in the 20th minute was always going wide of target, while Khune had to make a good save to deny Mpho Makola’s goal-bound free kick in the 24th minute.
Njabulo Blom was off target in the 40th minute, and at the break the score remained level between the two select-sides.
Thembinkosi Lorch had a chance in the opening minute of the second half, but his shot lacked power and Masuleke saved comfortably. Gamaldien went wide from a free kick in the 48th minute.
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, who came on in the second half, saw his 54th minute long distance shot take a deflection, but Masuluke was able to get down to make the save.
Masuluke made another save with fifteen minutes to go, this time denying Monnapule Saleng’s shot from the left, while Taariq Fielies headed wide at the other end in the 79th minute.
Gamildien got his second goal in the 83rd minute to give Warriors the lead, a great cross from his Swallows’ teammate Thabo Matlaba to set him up.
Masuluke went forward for the final corner of the game, but headed over and Warriors were victorious in the final.
