Baroka Assessing Former Attacking Midfielder

Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has confirmed that the club is looking at the possibility of bringing attacking midfielder Gerald Phiri Jr back to the club.

Phiri, 31, was with the Limpopo-based Motsepe Foundation Championship side from 2019-2021 before joining Sudanese giants Al-Hilal on a three-year deal though he spent just two seasons there.

The Malawian international was motivated by the prospects of playing in the CAF Champions League with Hilal and even featured against Mamelodi Sundowns in the group stages of the tournament in 2022 and 2023.

However, he terminated his contract due to reported trauma of the civil war in the country in April last year. Phiri Jr is now back in Limpopo, with Mphahlele saying if he can add value, they will sign him.

“He’s going to be tested, and we’ll see if he can help the team,” said Mphahlele.

“And if he can help the team, he will be our addition to the team. He’s welcome, this is his team in South Africa. If he can add value to the team, we are going to welcome him.”

Meanwhile, the club boss says he is happy with the performance of coach Amukelani “Ja-Jay” Hlongwane who took over after Morgan Mammila’s departure in September.

Hlongwane has managed eight points in four matches seeing the side in seventh position with nine points. Mphahlele says there is no need to fix something that’s not broken.

“He’s doing well and if it’s not broken why fix it,” added the Bakgaka boss.

“We are helping him. We wish that he can do even more, and we wish to keep him forever if he can do more. So, we are just watching closely the performance of the team.”
