Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver has made a return to professional football after joining Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers North West University for the 2026/27 campaign.
The 25-year-old Vyver, who last played professional football back in the 2022/23 campaign, started his first game for his new club on the weekend as NWU drew 1-1 with Upington City.
Vyver won five caps for the national team, making his debut in the 2021 COSAFA Cup, where South Africa won the tournament under Morena Ramoreboli. His other four caps came in the 2022 COSAFA Cup and in CHAN qualifiers that same year.
After helping Cape Town Spurs win promotion to the Betway Premiership in 2022/23, Vyver had serious medical issues and needed surgery. While the procedure was a success, he struggled to regain his fitness and lost his place at Spurs and was released by the club when Ernst Middendorp was in charge.
However, after a brief stint at FN Rangers in the ABC Motsepe League, he returned to Spurs last season, where they also played in the ABC Motsepe League following their relegation from professional football.
Now, at 25, still relatively young for a goalkeeper, and with over 50 professional appearances already in the bank, Vyver will be looking to revive his career in new surroundings.
