Emile Witbooi and Cheswyn Philander’s first half goals were enough to see Cape Town City beat Hope FC 2-0 to bag the Cape Derby bragging rights at Athlone Stadium in Sunday afternoon’s Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The Cape Town derby between Hope FC and Cape Town City was the main talking point in match day four of the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
At a sold-out Athlone Stadium, Hope FC started the game well threatening CT City. The Citizens managed to keep them at bay. After half an hour, Gabriel Amato played a good pass to Emile Witbooi who finished the ball so well beating Hope FC goalkeeper Dejean Ah Shene 1-0.
Three minutes later, the goalscorer became the provider as Witbooi laid a tap-in pass to Cheswyn Philander who made no mistake and put it home to make it 2-0. CT City managed to hold on to the lead despite Hope pushing. The win sees City moving to fifth place, while Hope drops to ninth place.
In Eastern Cape, the top-of-the-table clash between Highbury FC and Magesi FC saw Dikwena tsa metsi go into the break leading by 1-0 through Naeem Amoojee who is the former Highbury FC player. As it stands, Magesi will go top of the league table. Magesi held on to their first half goal and managed to walk away with maximum points. Dikwena are now sitting top with 12 points after four games, three points clear of Real Native.
The struggle continued for The Bees after suffering a 2-0 defeat away from home against Hungry Lions. The Bees remain in 16th place after losing all opening four games. Venda FC suffered their third straight defeat in a 3-2 thriller at home at the hands of Upington City. Clinton Larsen is currently skating on thin ice and Venda finds themselves in 15th place with one point after four games.
Real Native FC registered back-to-back wins after a narrow win over Lerumo Lions. Samuel Bafana Nana scored the only goal of the match inside 60th minute. Native move to second place in the league table with nine points after four matches.
