Hunt’s Red Card Explained

SuperSport United assistant coach Andre Arendse has explained Gavin Hunt got sent off because he got too emotional over a potential offside before Orlando Pirates’ third goal.

Matsatsantsa lost their MTN8 quarter-final to Orlando Pirates 3-1 after extra-time at a packed Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

However, the match was evenly poised for large parts before the Buccaneers raced to a two-goal lead in extra-time.

Hunt gut sent off right after Pirates’ third goal, with Arendse confirming he argued over a potential offside.

“It’s difficult to say… It wasn’t so much about the penalty that wasn’t given,” he told journalists after the game.

“It was more about the offside [before] the third goal. From the angle that we were looking at it, it looked like there was clear daylight between the players and [should’ve been] an offside.

“Very difficult for us, obviously we need to watch it again to be 100% clear. And if it wasn’t offside, I’ll be the first to apologise to the officials.

“But I think when the game is played at such a massive pace, you’ve got to keep up with that. It becomes critical for both sides, this time around it was one that heavily affected us because we were still in the game.

“It’s the nature of the game, you’re gonna get calls like that – whether you get it or whether you don’t get it, whether against or for you, those things are going to happen.

“As coaches we always want people to be right up there with the game, the best that they can do, because we demand the best from our players as well.

“That was the emotions that came through with the remonstrating and unfortunately it led to Gavin’s red card.”
