Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has dissected the two MTN8 final penalties, arguing that Abongile Tom made the right call for the Orlando Pirates spot kick while adding that the official did however get the Mamelodi Sundowns penalty wrong.

The Brazilians were crowned Wafa Wafa champions for the fifth time after beating the Buccaneers 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The biggest talking point after the titanic final was regarding the two penalties with many arguing that they were both soft.

‘The Principal’ has since joined in on the conversation and explained why the Pirates penalty, which they missed, was correctly given while the Masandawana one should not have been allowed to stand.

“Mokoena there had shoulder-to-shoulder challenge and thereafter he extended his hand by pushing Mbuthuma,” he said on Soccerzone.

“Correct decision by Abongile Tom to award the penalty.

“Look at the stretchered arm there. You don’t stretch the arm like this; if you do like this, this is pushing.

“So, referee will award a penalty. Correct decision by Abongile Tom.”

On the Sundowns penalty, Hlungwani believes that Siyanda Ndlovu committed two fouls against Thapelo Mokobodi which was missed by the referee

“We see Ndlovu holding [Mokobodi],” he added.

“He [Ndlovu] then stamps on him as he’s trying to move even on the head. As he stamps on him [Mokobodi], an offence is committed.

“The player could not stand up because there’s a holding offence [on Mokobodi].

“Here, penalty was given. Incorrect decision because the referee missed the stepping on the hand by Ndlovu on Mokobodi.”
