After recently extending his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns, captain Teboho Mokoena is still determined to fulfil his dream of playing overseas but admits that he wanted to continue with the club’s project.
Mokoena, 27, was heavily linked with a move to some of Europe’s biggest leagues with interest said to have soared in the player after a successful 2023 AFCON where he played a starring role in Bafana Bafana clinching a bronze medal as well as a double-winning 2024/25 campaign with Sundowns – being triumphant in the Betway Premiership and the inaugural African Football League.
The Sundowns free-kick specialist however recently signed a new deal at Chloorkop until 2029 with an option for a further year, but ‘Tebza’ says he still wants to play overseas.
“The dream is still alive,” Mokoena told the media during an MTN8 presser when quizzed if his overseas dream was over.
“We still have [FIFA] Club World Cup, so yeah we’ll see next year again.”
Tebza further clarified why he opted to stay at Sundowns instead of pursuing overseas options.
“For me, I’m happy to be at the club,” he added.
“The reason I signed a contract [extension] is because I know the project of the club, and I wanted to be part of the project.
“So, it was an easy decision for me to stay here because we still have Club World Cup, we still have CAF, we still have AFL and I still have Bafana Bafana on the side, so yeah.”
The former SuperSport United youth star looks set to lead Sundowns past Stellenbosch FC when the two sides clash in the first of a two-legged MTN8 semifinals tie at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.
