Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has revealed what he told referee Abongile Tom in the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates after the opposition’s penalty was saved.

Mokoena scored the opener early in the first half at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. It was his second goal of the tournament as he helped his side to go on to win the final 2-0.

The 29-year-old however almost became a villain before Sundowns secured the victory in the 60th minute when he appeared to have brought down Yanela Mbuthuma in the box.

With the Brazilians narrowly leading the game 1-0, Ghampani Lungu stepped up to the spot but was denied by Ronwen Williams.

In injury time, Miguel Cardoso’s men won their own spot kick which Iqraam Rayners converted to see Sundowns lift the Wafa Wafa trophy for the first time since 2021.

Mokoena said after the game he told referee Tom how relieved he was that the Pirates penalty was saved.

“I just said to Mr Ref, God is great,” said Mokoena on SuperSport TV.

Meanwhile, this is Sundowns’ second silverware this season following the FIFA Africa-Asia- Pacific trophy they won last month.
