After the MTN8 semi-finals were completed this past weekend, iDiski Times selected their Team of the Semis of the Wafa Wafa competition.
Orlando Pirates booked their third successive MTN8 final and could become the first side to win the competition three years in a row.
The Buccaneers brushed aside Eric Tinkler’s Cape Town City, who put up a fight in the first leg, collecting a 1-1 draw at home, but were unable to really threaten Pirates at their own home ground, going down 2-0.
After his Man of the Match performance and goal, Deon Hotto was included in our selection, alongside the other goalscorer Tshegofatso Mabasa, as well as Relebohile Mofokeng, Thalente Mbatha and Olisa Ndah.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC twice beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 to progress to their first ever MTN8 final, upsetting the four-time winners.
Stellies could become the 16th different team to win the MTN8 (or its predecessors), which would only be the second official trophy for Steve Barker’s side after last season’s Carling Knockout Cup.
There were several standout players in the Cape Winelands-based team, including goalkeeper Sage Stephens, goalscorers Fawaaz Basadien and Lehlohonolo Mojela, as well as Ismael Toure, Jayden Adams and Andre de Jong, who was named Man of the Match in the second leg.
Please note: It was impossible to not include both Fawaaz Basadien and Deon Hotto in the final XI. Hotto played on the left as well.
