The Premier Soccer League has confirmed that Moses Mabhida Stadium will host this year’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC.
It promises to be a humdinger, as both sides have enjoyed good results at the stadium in recent years and the attendance never disappointed. The final between the two sides will kick off on 5 October, with the exact time yet to be confirmed.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium is hosting it’s fifth consecutive MTN8 final, as confirmed by the PSL on Wednesday.
“The highly anticipated MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC will take place on Saturday, 05 October 2024 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban,” the PSL stated.
“The hosting rights for the 2024/25 MTN8 final attracted widespread interest, with proposals submitted by various provinces, including Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu- Natal, and Mpumalanga.
“After an evaluation by the PSL Executive Committee during a special EXCO meeting this afternoon, and taking into consideration the input from the sponsor, the rights were awarded to the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
“Further details regarding kick-off time, ticketing, and other logistical arrangements will be announced by the PSL in due course.
“The official home-and-away draw for the final will be conducted on Monday, 16 September 2024 on the popular TV sports show, Extra-Time, LIVE on SuperSport PSL Channel (202) at 20h30.”
Pirates have won back-to-back MTN8 finals at the same venue and also lifted the 2020 trophy there. But Stellenbosch also had a good run at Moses Mabhida Stadium, as they were crowned Carling Knockout Cup champions at the venue in December, lifting their first ever trophy after beating TS Galaxy on penalties. They’ve also played their recent MTN8 semi-final second leg against Mamelodi Sundowns at the very same venue.
Pirates eliminated SuperSport United 3-1 in the quarter-final before eliminating Cape Town City 3-1 on aggregate. Meanwhile, Stellies beat MTN8 debutants TS Galaxy 3-1 at Danie Craven Stadium in the quarter-finals before shocking Mamelodi Sundowns and knocking them out with a 2-0 aggregate score.
