Rulani On The Enormity Of Beating Chiefs & Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is hopeful beating Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the same week will develop stronger ‘trust’ within the squad.

Sundowns secured a 1-0 win over Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday before the 3-2 aggregate win over Chiefs in the MTN8 semi-final.

While it was nervy, with question marks around a late potential penalty – Masandawana soldiered through with two wins over the Soweto giants.

“I would hope it has incredible benefits in a sense that a trust starts to develop, that we can trust each other in difficult moments and we can trust each other in difficult games,” Mokwena said.

“But it’s only three points on Wednesday and a place in the final, nothing more than that – that’s the reality. So as much as we celebrate its enormity, and really, really it is.

“Something we should never take for granted, not many teams, or Sundowns teams have been able to beat Chiefs and Pirates in the same week, let alone in the space of four days.

“So congratulations to this fantastic group, the game of football belongs to them. As Mamelodi Sundowns we are very fortunate to have this group of players.”

They now await the winner between Pirates and Stellenbosch to learn their opposition for the domestic cup final.
