Barker Furious Over Late Chiefs Goal

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker was furious with the referee decision around Kaizer Chiefs’ injury-time goal in their Nedbank Cup quarter-final.

Amakhosi booked their spot for the last four after a controversial second goal at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Pule Mmodi had pushed the ball over the line but the linesman raised his flag for what seemed a foul on Sage Stephens. But after discussions between referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa and his assistant, the goal was given.

Chiefs even netted a third goal on a late counter to seal their spot in the semi-finals, which left Barker furious, and he made reference to similar incidents against his team.

“I’m not going to talk about the game… Two years ago in the MTN8 quarter-final we get a penalty in the 96th minute against Chiefs, at Danie Craven, and it gets overturned,” he said on SuperSport TV.

“We play in the final against Pirates, they get a free-kick 5 meters in advance, it gets given.

“Today, the linesman puts his flag up for a foul on our goalkeeper, we can clearly see it was, it gets overturned.

“So what can I say? Thank you.”
