Cardoso Cites Argentina Legend

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has quoted former Argentina attacking midfielder Pablo Aimar when it comes to what matters to coaches between performance and results.

Sundowns take on Limpopo ABC Motsepe league side Mpheni Home Defenders in the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup on the back of a shock 1-0 loss to TS Galaxy in the league earlier in the week.

The Brazilians, who reached the final of the competition last season, have suffered at the hands of the least favoured sides this term including a loss in the final of the Carling Knockout Cup to rookies Magesi FC.

Cardoso was asked what takes precedence between performance and results and he cited Aimar saying there is only so much coaches have control over.

“Yesterday I found some expression after a match from an ex-player who is now a coach,” said Cardoso.

“He’s Argentine his name is Pablo Aimar he is quite an interesting mind to read and to listen to. He said sometimes people confuse coaching with control and that comes directly with your question. We coaches, we coach, so we try to influence, we try to grow; to develop players and teams but we can’t control outcomes of matches. Sometimes the outcomes of the matches they are uncontrollable.

“What we should control always is the way we behave on the pitch that is our job as coaches. So, performance obviously comes from the coaching and that we can try to influence as much as possible. But then there are details sometimes on the match that brings results that are not expected.

“That’s why I started the press conference by saying the most important thing about these kinds of matches are about having the proper mind-set so that what you do on a regular basis every day appears on the pitch and allows you to get the results.

“So that’s exactly how I feel about the situation.”
