Comitis Ready To Fight For FNB Sponsor Ahead The Nedbank Cup

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis says the PSL has still not officially granted his club an approval of the FNB sponsorship.

But he said he knows the league has no leg to stand on after he won the matter in court where it was decided City did nothing wrong in acquiring the giant financial institution to be their front shirt sponsor.

Because of the court order, City have been carrying on in using the sponsor, while the league has not appealed the decision and neither have granted the club the sponsorship – even though they were instructed to do so.

According to iDiski Times sources, Comitis covered all the loopholes and even consulted TS Galaxy president Tim Sukazi, who is well versed on football legalities.

While City and the PSL have been at the loggerheads about the sponsorship, this threatened City’s opening game of the season against Mamelodi Sundowns not to be played, with the league informing the club hours before the game kicked off that they had not approved it.

But Comitis insisted if the PSL were not happy with something, then he would have sorted this matter in less than 30 minutes.

When City acquired FNB on 1 August, they sent all the documentation to the league to approve it, but to this day the league has not approved it.

“The court said that the league can’t stop us having this sponsorship,” Comitis told iDiski Times on Monday.

“The league has to go to court to reverse the decision and they haven’t done that. [But they haven’t done] it because they know that they will not win the case. So I have carried on with the business as usual.”

The PSL’s argument to City is that FNB sponsorship is in conflict of interest to one of the league’s biggest sponsors, Nedbank, who sponsors the Nedbank Cup.

Interestingly, the Ke Yona Cup is coming up, with the draw taking place on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if the league will go to court to appeal the court award and have the sponsorship suspended. However, Comitis is ready to fight.

“I don’t know what is going to happen because the Nedbank Cup is coming and let’s see what they say,” said Comitis.

“I know what the rights are, so if they are ready I’m ready for them – that’s all I’m going to say.”
