Durban City head coach Pitso Dladla has detailed why clinching the Nedbank Cup title last weekend was “special”.
The Citizens hoisted the trophy after a 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

This triumph marks the first time a KwaZulu-Natal side has won a major trophy since 2009, when Golden Arrows claimed the MTN8 under Manqoba Mngqithi.
Dladla pointed to the club’s promotion, its new identity as Durban City, and its recent relocation as the three reasons why this victory feels so historic despite the whirlwind of off-field changes.
“To us, luckily, I think if we looked at it that way, we would have put ourselves under unnecessary pressure. To say it’s been 17 years, no team from KZN, won the trophy,” said Dladla.
“But with the leadership that we’ve got, only now that I’m realising our chairman was advising us that we must not look at that. We must treat this cup final in isolation, because that will bring pressure that maybe we could not be able to control.
“But the cup, I would say it means a lot to the team, Durban City, because of several reasons. One, a newly promoted team, we’ve just revived the name Durban City, we’ve just relocated to Durban.
“Yes, KZN has been running throughout in terms of the cup, but it’s something that means a lot to everyone in KZN, but not necessarily because of 17 years. It’s more about what is happening currently and all these things that I’ve mentioned.”
