Referee Akhona Makalima was spoilt for choice in her delaying to award Kaizer Chiefs a penalty against Chippa United, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.
There had been confusion because Makalima took so long to point to the spot after the Chilli Boys captain Stanley Nwabali impeded Pule Mmodi by bringing him down before the Nigeran international shotstopper repeated that same offence on Mduduzi Shabalala in quick succession.
Dissecting the incidents on Soccerzone, ‘The Principal’ applauded Makalima for taking her time in blowing the whistle because she gave Chiefs the advantage to see if Shabalala would tuck away the second attempt after Mmodi tumbled to the ground.
“Here we see highly experienced referee Akhona Makalima was the referee of the match on the elite panel of CAF,” he said.
“Here we see holding. There’s too much holding – both legs by Nwabali on Mmodi there.
“The second one the referee delayed. The referee was spoilt for choice whether to choose this one [Nwabalai foul on Mmodi] or this one [Nwabali foul on Shabalala].
“With her experience, she delayed the whistle and then the second one nothing happened [no goal was scored] and then she blew for the penalty.
