Hlungwani – Stellies Defender Should’ve Walked

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani says referee Sikhumbuso Gasa should’ve issued a red card for Stellenbosch FC defender Ismael Toure for a deliberate hand ball as well as shoving Kaizer Chiefs star Gaston Sirino in the face.

Hlungwani said the Ivorian should not have finished the match which Chiefs went on to win 3-1 to advance to the semis of the competition. In one incident Toure handled the ball in the box and was only penalised with a spot kick and no caution which Hlungwani said was incorrect.

“We see a handball by Ismael Toure,” said Hlungwani on SABC’s Soccerzone.

“Now this handball is called deliberate handball because a hand was used towards the ball. Sirino crosses the ball, you can see that a hand was used to stop the ball.

“As it stops the ball, who is behind? [Glody] Lilepo is behind to receive the ball. So, when he is behind to receive the ball there’s what we call ‘breaking or stopping a promising attack’.

“Therefore a penalty is given correctly but then what about the yellow card for stopping or interfering with a promising attack? A yellow card should have come out for Ismael Toure for stopping a promising attack using deliberate handball.

“So, a yellow card was not given, a penalty was given correct decision for the penalty.”

On the incident that saw Toure’s hand in Sirino’s face, Hlungwani said the decision should have been a red card and together with the one not given relating to the handball, the player was destined for an early shower.

“Let’s now move to the next one, where we’ll show you why we say that a yellow card should have come out,” added the former referee.

“If we go to the next one, there is a hand to the face by Ismael Toure on Sirino. You know Sirino is temperamental. I must commend [Sirino] because Sirino would have retaliated,” he continued.

“The klap on the face is violent conduct. Violent conduct means the player is using excessive force or brutality and therefore the player must be sent off. That was full contact on the face that was a klap.

“If he had received a yellow card for that deliberate handball, it would have been a second yellow card, and then he goes [off].

“So Toure was not supposed to have continued with the game from these 39 minutes. The second incident on its own should have been a red card. If the referee misses the red, he should have given a yellow and that yellow that he missed would have become a second yellow and then he goes.”

On the incident involving Ashley Du Preez and Thabo Moloisane, Hlungwani said the referee should have awarded a penalty to Amakhosi and issued a yellow card to the defender for the use of the hand on the Chiefs forward.
