Mabasa Hat-trick Fires Pirates Into Nedbank Cup Quarters

Orlando Pirates secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup after a 3-0 win over Baroka at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tshegofatso Mabasa netted two goals in the opening half as he profited from some slick Pirates build-ups to secure goal number 10 and then 11 for the season.

The second tier side, famous for beating Pirates in the cup whilst in the ABC Motsepe League and the 2017 Telkom Knockout final showed some grit, fighting spirt and at times technical flair going forward but it wasn’t enough to create clear cut chances.

Sipho Chaine was rather comfortable in Pirates goals throughout and in the second half, with Bakgaka needing to fight their way back into the game, Pirates saw things out professionally to secure their spot in the last eight.

Mabasa’s third goal was possibly the pick of the bunch with Patrick Maswanganyi providing a back-heel assist for the final nail in the coffin to the visitors.

They join SuperSport United, Stellenbosch, Durban City and Marumo Gallants into the next round of the cup competition.
