Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite says he is pleased for Yusuf Maart who went from villain to hero in helping his side break their trophy spell this season to secure the Nedbank Cup trophy.
Maart who is the current Chiefs skipper scored the winning goal a stunner against Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank cup final last month as Amakhosi won their first trophy in 10 years and also qualify for the CAF Confederation cup.
Mashamaite was the last Amakhosi captain to lift a trophy in 2015 before the 2025 feat. He spoke to IDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 206 of the newspaper where he said stepping up in a final shows leadership and it’s redemption for the 29 year old who has been grinding even in tough times.
“That’s the nature of the game, you are a hero one minute and then a zero the next minute,” Mashamaite told iDiski Times.
“So you have to know what you are signing yourself up for when you put on your boots. I’m just happy for him to be able to score the winning goal as a captain; that’s the stuff of leadership.
“You know the stakes are high, and you raise your hand and say ‘I deserve this armband. I’m showing you guys why the team has believed in him, and has chosen me as a leader’.
“I’m happy for the young man. He deserves all the happiness with all the blame and everything, he’s just been grinding and been present. So it should be a moment of redemption for him, finally and also to put his prints on the history of Kaizer Chiefs.”
Golden Arrows are in talks with head coach Manqoba Mngqithi to extend his stay at the club after initially signing a short-term deal.
