Riveiro Reveals Key To Scintillating Form Ahead Of NBC Semis

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says confidence in the group and the short-term goals for the end-of-season run has been key to their recent form.

Pirates have won five games consecutively for the first time under the Spaniard, scoring 18 goals, conceding three, which included that infamous 7-1 win over Golden Arrows.

The run has put them neck and neck with Stellenbosch in the race for the CAF Champions League qualification spot as they trail the second-placed side by three points with four DStv Premiership games to go.

But this weekend, in-form Chippa United stand in their way of a consecutive Nedbank Cup final, where they could face Mamelodi Sundowns or Steve Barker’s troops – who did a league double over the Buccaneers this season.

“Probably not only one reason [why we are in such good form] like you said, it’s part of the process, where it’s a moment where I think we have many players in good form,” Riveiro said.

“Many [players], even like the captain said, players who are not even participating or not in every game, they are still pushing and helping the ones who are participating to keep that motivation and that moment of form – it’s one of the reasons.

“Again… one of the key things is we’re converting our performances with goals, results are coming and when results are coming everyone feels much more confident and you can even perform over your… not limits but average performances, let’s say.

“The team is in a moment where they feel confident, I think we went through a right period right now, facing different types of challenges, coming back in games, facing different scenarios and in almost all of them we managed to put the game in our way [to win].

“That’s giving our players a big confidence in what they are doing and the end of the season, you see the objectives even closer, it’s easier to be focused and concentrated on that, because it’s close, it’s short-term and that’s one of the things helping us to be the team we’re looking like right now.”

The Chilli Boys will host the reigning Nedbank Cup champions at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday at 15h00.
